Heartbeat Records Launches Extensive Studio One Series Celebrating 50 Years Of Jamaican Music By Founding Father Of Reggae Lengendary Producer Clement S. Dodd
Each Installment Fully Remastered With Rare Tracks From Original Studio One Recordings Bob Marley & The Wailers From Studio One Out Now Collections Features The Best Of Their Early Output Follows Other Definitive Releases
Cambridge, MA – Heartbeat Records has proudly kicked off an extensive CD series by the most venerated record label in reggae music – Studio One. Called the "Motown of Jamaica" by GQ magazine, it was founded and operated by renowned Jamaican producer Clement S. Dodd, who helped create a legacy for artists who would later become international reggae legends, from Bob Marley and the Wailers to the Heptones, Burning Spear, and Marcia Griffiths. Over the past 50 years, Dodd (also known as “Sir Coxsone”) recorded nearly every major Reggae artist in Jamaica resulting in hundreds of Jamaican hits. The rhythms he created inspired thousands of “versions,” and influenced many top artists including Sean Paul, Lauryn Hill and the Fugees, Shaggy and Dawn Penn as well as No Doubt and even The Clash.
Mr Dodd passed away in 2004 leaving a legacy of his own which Heartbeat celebrates with the release of multiple titles in the coming year. “I’m very excited about the relaunch of the Studio One catalog on Heartbeat," says label VP of A&R Chris Wilson, "not only because I think it’s a great testimony to the legacy of Clement S. Dodd – but it because it really represents the history and foundation of Reggae music." Wilson collaborated with Dodd on 65 releases.
"The future of Studio One however is as bright as its past," adds Dodd's daughter, Carol, who with her Mother currently runs the Studio One recording facilities in Brooklyn and Kingston. "We will keep my father's legacy alive by continuing to work with promising new artists as well as Heartbeat to find and release all the best material from the vaults."
Starting in the Ska era of the early Sixties, through the Rock Steady period (late ’60s), right up until the present day, Dodd’s Studio One label, which is regarded as the birthplace of Reggae Music, has remained the principal force formulating popular ideas of, and within, Jamaican music. Dodd's influence is significant also because he captured in his records something the society needed to express. It was an era of new consciousness and great political awareness in a newly independent country. These Studio One tracks are not only
examples of great performances in their own right, but they also embrace the cultural themes that comprise the Jamaican experience. Because of this, the Jamaican public – even today – responds enthusiastically to the music Dodd created throughout his lifetime. For over half a century, he ruled over the Jamaican music scene by the very force of his personality, and by the breadth of his musical accomplishments.
Heartbeat's new series features fully remastered CD's from the original Studio One recordings, including rare tracks (some previously unreleased on CD). Each release is of the highest sound quality and is annotated with brand new liner notes illustrating the relevant history of the tracks and the times. The first installment was recently released with three titles: The Best of Studio One; Full Up: More Hits from Studio One and Downbeat the Ruler: Killer Instrumentals from Studio One. Just released is Bob Marley and the Wailers, One Love
at Studio One which contains the first chronological survey of Bob Marley and the Wailers recordings made at Studio One. Pitchfork Media said "One Love at Studio One will likely make you very happy... a very solid set...[with] a number of excellent rude boy tracks that helped establish the Wailers as spokesmen for the ghetto..."

BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS: ONE LOVE AT STUDIO ONE
When the “rude boys” gathered at Studio One on Brentford Road in Kingston, the acknowledged leaders were the Wailers. The youthful Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh generated an enthusiasm which was one of the cornerstones of the Ska era, and in these early days they laid the foundation for one of the greatest musical legacies the world has ever known. The forty songs on this collection include the cream of their Studio One output as well as previously unreleased alternate takes and rare Jamaican singles sides. In most cases this material is taken from the original session tapes and is presented without the overdubs found on other collections of this material. The in-depth liner notes,
culled from hundreds of hours of interviews by Wailers authorities Roger Steffens and Leroy Jodie Pierson, pieced together with the Wailers formative years at Studio One, and the music, make this the definitive Studio One Wailers collection.
