The Florida Theatre is proud to bring The Robert Cray Band to the stage Thursday, March 30, 2006 at 8:00 PM. Tickets on sale Friday, February 24, 2006.
The Robert Cray band first saw the fruits of success with their double platinum breakthrough album Strong Persuader. Offering a unique mixture of blues, R&B and soul, the band has since then garnered a loyal fan base as well as the respect of fellow musicians.
The intelligence and sophistication of their recent CD echoes their same signature sound that has won them two more gold records, 12 Grammy nominations, five Grammy wins and an impressive tour schedule that has taken them around the world.
Robert Cray started playing the guitar in his early teens and had his very first band touring college towns on the west coast by his early twenties. He signed with Mercury Records in 1982, and by the 1990s, his soulful voice, mixed along with his crisp guitar work and original blues sound, won him sizable recognition in the music business.
Robert Cray is one of the original members of The Robert Cray Band, formed in 1974 in Eugene , Oregon . The band toured throughout the 70s, giving Cray just enough time to make his film debut as the bassist for a frat party band in “National Lampoon’s Animal House.” The band has seen many different faces from behind the instruments come and go, but in 1989, Kevin Hayes, drums, and Jim Pugh, keyboards, signed on and have been playing with the band ever since, with bass guitarist Karl Sevareid joining shortly after in 1991.
The 80s and 90s brought several memorable milestones to the band, including the opportunities to play with such legends as Chuck Berry, Keith Richards and Eric Clapton, the honor of Grammy awards and nominations and 11 hit album releases. Going into a new decade, The Robert Cray Band will continue to satisfy their fans’ appetites for their soulful sound with no clear end in sight.
