No computers, No Pro-Tools, No Plug-Ins...The Cringe To Record New Album On Tape At New York City's Famous Avatar Studios

Band to begin recording February 25, 2006  on a vintage Neve 8068 console --The mixing board revered by rock royalty for its warm, one-of-a-kind sound

Married life hasn't slowed down The Cringe's frontman John Cusimano, who recently wed The Food Network's Rachael Ray.  He'll be warming her heart at a special Valentine's Day concert at Arlene's Grocery on Tuesday, February 14th at 9:30 PM where the band will premiere songs from their upcoming yet-as-untitled new album, in addition to well known favorites.

When John and the band are through playing live for loved ones and fans at Arlene's Grocery, they will head to New York City's famed Avatar Studios, for the warm, one-of-a-kind sound revered by rock royalty. Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Blondie and Eric Clapton are just of few of the artists who have recorded at the landmark New York studio, which has been in business for over 20 years (formally known as Power Station).

Engineer Steve Hardy will return to the helm on February 25, 2006 at Avatar's legendary Studio A when The Cringe begin production on their new album.  Steve engineered The Cringe's Scratch The Surface sessions that produced a string of Top 40 radio hits including "Burn", "Been Alone" and "Another Day." The band will be recording on a vintage Neve 8068 console and recording and mixing the entire album on tape -- the same recording process used by many classic rock bands The Cringe grew up listening to. The band will not use computers, Pro-Tools, or plug-ins.

“Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of music on vinyl, and it’s striking how much better these records sound than some of the newer computerized recordings,” says Cusimano.  “Newer technology recordings tend to get sampled, compressed, and pitch corrected until there’s barely any life left in them.  Thank God for musicians like Jack White and others, who are doing their best to keep analog recording alive and well.”

According to Hardy, “It’s been a while since I’ve recorded entirely on tape – we tracked the last [Cringe] album on tape, and then dumped it into Pro-Tools for overdubs and mixing.  Recently, I went back and listened to some of my older work which was done entirely on tape and it has a certain warmth and attitude that I have really missed since I switched to recording with digital workstations in the past few years.”

Hardy adds, “The combination of recording on tape, working on the Neve, and tracking in [Avatar’s] Studio A is an engineer’s dream scenario!”

The Cringe recently released “On and On,” the latest single from their first LP Scratch the Surface.
