The Isley Brothers R&B/Funk/Soul Songbook Comes To Life On DVD On November 15, 2005 Summer Breeze - Greatest Hits Live
NEW YORK, NY- OCTOBER 27, 2005 - Eagle Rock Entertainment, the leading independent source for high quality music audio/visual programming, will release the Isley Brothers: Summer Breeze- Greatest Hits Live on DVD on November 15th, a seamless live set of classics from the songbook of one the true fountainheads of R&B, funk and soul.
Here, Ronald Isley, forever a profound, distinctive R&B singer, and his younger brother, virtuoso guitarist Ernie, take the audience through a half-century of American music. Aided by a full band, several background singers and dancers, the Brothers begin with "Between the Sheets" and "Footsteps" -- two bedroom soul hits that today's music fans will recognize at the bedrock of, respectively, the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Big Poppa" and Ice Cube's "It Was Good Day."
From there, the Brothers touch on their gospel-influenced rock and roll standards "Shout" and "Twist And Shout," as well as covers of Seals and Croft's "Summer Breeze" and Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me." Finally, Ronald assumes the guise of his celebrated Mr. Biggs persona for "Down Low" and "Contagious," which features a cameo from R. Kelly, Ronald's recent collaborator.
The DVD, which also includes bonus interviews with Ronald and Ernie Isley, was filmed earlier this year by Eagle Eye Productions in high definition and recorded in stereo, 5.1 and digital DTS surround.
From 1959 until this year, some form of the Isley Brothers have been at the forefront of R&B, soul and funk: there is simply no other act in popular music that can claim a career of such long-lasting vitality. Initially a gospel trio comprised by Cincinnati brothers Ronald, Rudolph and O'Kelly Isley, they released two seminal R&B singles, "Shout" in 1959 (later popularized by the film Animal House) and their first hit, "Twist and Shout," in 1962 (later covered by the Beatles). The brothers then signed to MoTown, where they cut their hit "This Old Heart of Mine," a time when their backing band included a young guitarist named Jimi Hendrix.
In 1969, the trio welcomed their two younger brothers, Ernie and bassist Marvin, as well as keyboardist Chris Jasper, into the group. This began arguably the Isley Brothers' purplest patch: records like "It's Your Thing," "That Lady" and "Fight the Power" stand head to toe with the best of James Brown and Parliament/Funkadelic in the pantheon of funk. In the late 70s and early 80s, the group focused on slinky slow jams, like 1976's "Footsteps" and 1983's "Between the Sheets."
After O'Kelly's death in 1987, Rudolph's departure for the ministry, and the younger brothers moved onto other projects, Ronald gained a new lease on life as Mister Biggs, a vengeful, cuckolded "mafia don" character on a series of late 90s singles produced by R. Kelly.
