London's Time Out magazine called her "a singer and actress with a voice so deep it’s almost subterranean and so bluesy your mind pictures her suffering the night away with a bottle of whisky in hand". Harpers & Queens says, "She is more than a great voice, she is several great voices." The influential music paper New Musical Express keeps it short: "provocative and unorthodox", while the Daily Telegraph agrees: "Her excellent voice soars and swoops with the agony and ecstasy of the delta and smoky Chicago clubs".
There is no doubt that Sarah Jane Morris is an extraordinary woman. And it's not only the mournful songs of the blues with which the diva from the southern English port of Southampton gives her audience goose bumps. As an artist she has never been short of new ideas, and her versatility is almost dizzying. What's more, the only daughter among six brothers is just as happy on the theatrical stage as she is on the musical one. As a singer she easily straddles soul and jazz, pop and singer-songwriter ballads, musicals and avant-garde. She feels equally at home in the intimate atmosphere of a smoky London jazz club and a Sicilian open-air arena. And when she's not touring her own material or recording a new album, she's happy to lend her three-octave voice to a respected colleague or to delight the audience at a benefit concert.
Sarah Jane Morris single-mindedly pursues her artistic aims, from the choice of songs to her stylistic preferences. She makes music that is multi-layered and free of clichés, enjoying no small degree of success since her career started in the early eighties. Whether in the cool UK, under the blue skies of Tuscany or in German concert halls – this lady gives everything she's got live. "I transform, I meet my demons on stage,” she told Folker magazine. "I allow them to tease and torment me. And then I try and control them and turn it into a sound."
