Currently Touring with 4-Piece Funk Band and Joyo Velarde throughout North America!
“He spews syllables with the speed and syncopation of a jazz singer over backup tracks evoking 1970's soul.” - NEW YORK TIMES
San Francisco, CA (April 6, 2005) – Known for his one of a kind, growling flow and boundless funk, Lyrics Born is back with more fire for your speaker box with Same !@#$ Different Day, a loose remix album of his critically acclaimed solo debut Later That Day…. The album is due out on Quannum Projects on April 26, 2005. With 5 new songs, and 8 remix tracks that are similar to the originals only in name, Same !@#$ Different Day is a fresh collection of Lyrics Born’s signature blend of funk, R&B, rock, reggae and soul that once again eschews any staid notions of what hip hop is all about.
Said Lyrics Born, “I wrote and produced the majority of the material on Later That Day…, but I’ve always thought of myself as an artist who not only can produce, but can also be produced. With Same !@#$, Different Day, I wanted to link up with outside producers and artists I admire, who could help me get beyond my own limitations. Most of the ‘remix’ tracks have entirely new lyrics, music, or both, and feature a slew of guest artists that weren't present on the originals.”
Lyrics Born’s grave baritone coupled with paramour Joyo Velarde’s operatic vocals creates a unique synergy that colors the entire record. "I Can't Wait For Your Love" is a soulful duet featuring the signature production of Chief Xcel of Blackalicious. Velarde also shines in melodic vocal exchanges with LB on the hauntingly sensual "Over You," brilliantly produced by DJ Shadow. The fierce yet smooth "I'm Just Raw" was produced by Grammy nominated Dan The Automator (Gorillaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School and Deltron 3030), whose working relationship with Lyrics Born extends back to LB's first single, which was recorded in Dan's mother's basement. For the traditionalists, LB brings together old school and new school on "Pack Up Remix," featuring the legendary KRS-One and Evidence (Dilated Peoples). "The Last Trumpet" with Lateef the Truth Speaker is peppered with afro-beat, Brazilian drums and intense scratches by DJ Shadow. Same !@#$ Different Day also features a remix of the hit single "Callin' Out," featuring the Bay Area's Casual (Hieroglyphics) and E-40. The album is rounded out with free-wheeling good times courtesy of Morcheeba, as well as infectious beats by Young Einstien/Ugly Duckling, Jumbo the Garbageman/Lifesavas, Cut Chemist/Jurassic 5 and DJ D Sharp.
Lyrics Born currently is touring North America backed by a 4 piece funk band and Joyo. Lyrics Born will be showcasing material from Same !@#$ Different Day, in addition to cuts from Later That Day… and Latyrx: The Album. His live show is phenomenal and he never fails to engage the crowd, overflowing with fast, energetic rhymes and commanding back up vocals. The band is comprised of B'nai Rebelfront on guitar, Darius Minaee on drums, Uriah Duffy on bass and Kevin Choice on keyboards.
Composer/ Producer/ MC Lyrics Born (aka Tom Shimura) founded the laudable Northern California hip-hop collective Solesides (now Quannum Projects) in 1992, along with DJ Shadow, Blackalicious and Lateef the Truth Speaker. In 2003, he firmly established his name as one of the most versatile MCs around with the groundbreaking solo debut Later That Day…, which seamlessly blends styles and defies categorization. Lyrics Born enjoyed major radio success when the single “Callin Out” was the No.1 most requested song on the influential Live 105 for three months, while stations across the country quickly caught on to the head-nodding bliss. The song is featured in a Diet Coke television ad with Adrien Brody as well as a Motorola commercial in Europe, Asia, Australia, and Latin America. Lyrics Born's music also has been featured in the major motion pictures Collateral and Abandon.
Check out LB tackling the late Jimmy Smith's "Stay Loose” on the just-released Verve Remixed 3 album. He also is featured on party anthem “The Get Down” on the forthcoming Z-Trip album Shifting Gears.
