LOS ANGELES, May 27 /PRNewswire/ - Carlos Santana and the Santana Band's Summer 2004 European tour kicks off July 2 in Amneville, France. The full-scale continental sweep includes 17 dates throughout the month of July, ending with a large arena show on the 25th in Schwaebisch, Germany; in between, the tour will touch down in Denmark, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, and Switzerland as well. Included in the itinerary are two dates at the world-famous Montreux Jazz Festival on July 13 and 15, the latter as part of a multi-artist program titled "Hymns: Songs For Love And Peace."
The 2004 summer European tour marks an exciting first for Santana as they welcome the inaugural appearance of the Salvador Santana Band as their opening act, starting with Montreux. Carlos and Deborah Santana's son Salvador -- a Cal Arts student -- formed the group with a nucleus of close friends, including three he's known since they were together in high school at San Francisco's School of the Arts. With Salvador on keyboards, the young band spotlights a primarily instrumental fusion of contemporary idioms including jazz, rock and hip-hop. While nothing is planned, as the tour unfolds, intergenerational Santana jams are a distinct possibility.
Prior to the tour, Santana will play three sneak shows at San Francisco's wonderfully restored Warfield Theatre on June 22, 23 and 24. Originally opened in 1922 as a golden era movie palace, the 2,700 capacity Bill Graham Productions-run venue offers a rare opportunity to see Santana in an intimate setting. The first of the three nights is a special concert exclusively for Official Santana Fan Club Members -- tickets are available now via a password-protected link on www.santana.com (log on for further information). The remaining two dates went on sale to the general public May 9. Following the tour, Carlos and the Santana Band will also perform two smaller-scale Los Angeles, CA dates, scheduled for September 30 and October 1 at the Greek Theatre.
Just last Sunday, May 16, Carlos -- renowned for his philanthropic work in addition to his artistry -- participated in the all-star line up for Quincy Jones' global humanitarian event, concert, and telecast/webcast "We Are The Future" at Circus Maximus in Rome, Italy. Others on hand included Alicia Keys, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, Muhammad Ali, Angelina Jolie, and Oprah Winfrey. Organized by Jones' Listen Up Foundation, the benefit event and ongoing "We Are The Future" programs have a mission of improving the lives of children around the globe victimized by conflict. And, guided by Jones' belief that "Peace is possible around the world, and children are the answer," of empowering young people everywhere to take action and have a voice in their own future.
To lend his support, music icon Carlos Santana took a break from the recording of his third album for Arista Records, and the 38th of his career. The disc, which is being executive produced by industry legend Clive Davis, follows up 2002's acclaimed #1 album Shaman, and the 1999 international blockbuster Supernatural, which won a record-breaking nine GRAMMYs, including Album of the Year, and Song of the Year, for "Smooth." Since he first exploded onto the global stage with his incendiary performance with Santana at the original Woodstock in 1969, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Carlos Santana has been a world-celebrated artist, and has sold upwards of 55 million albums throughout the course of his career.
