Velvet Revolver
Concert Review
At Hard Rock Live |
September 6, 2005 - Orlando, FL - Up until a few days ago, Velvet Revolver was scheduled to perform at the opening of the new Hard Rock in Biloxi, Mississippi. After sustaining damage from Hurricane Katrina the venue was closed.
Velvet Revolver made the decision to do a benefit show at Hard Rock Live. With all proceeds from ticket sales going to the American Red Cross. Hard Rock Live also donated proceeds from the night's Liquor sales (including bar tips) to help aid victims of hurricane Katrina. With Real Rock 101 one helping to promote the show that was only announced on Friday, a check for $250,000 was presented to the Red Cross after the show.
Duff McKagan |
Scott Weiland |
Hitting the stage around 9:00 pm, with bassist Duff McKagan covered in a sea of blue light, VR started the show off with "Sucker Train Blues." Vocalist Scott Weiland, was of course, wearing his trademark bright red and black jacket with black hat and sunglasses.
One of the first things Weiland did was remind the crowd "This is your party and it's a benefit for a very, very just cause." He asked the crowd to put aside differences and help those who need it. Hopefully politicians and others who are playing the blame game will heed his words and start helping those who were devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
During the 90 minute set, Velvet Revolver played songs from their "Contraband" album including the ballard "Fall To Pieces," which was made memorable by Slash's first rate guitar work. Scott, Duff and Slash constantly moved around the stage (followed by a spotlight) so fans everywhere could get a close up of the rock stars.

Slash wearing his trademark Black top hat |
When Slash came out with his trademark black top hat and twelve string guitar you could see people taking out their camera phones and flashing photos everywhere in the venue.

Velvet Revolver rocking the Hard Rock Live |
To spice up the show VR played a few Stone Temple Pilot songs including "Dead and Bloated" and "Sex Type Thing."
Showing their range during an encore, Velvet Revolver treated fans to a remarkable rendition of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here," when vocalist Scott Weiland said, "that song goes out to the people we're doing this benefit for," the crowd roared with approval.

Brian Johnson and Slash |
The highlight of the show was when Scott Weiland turned the microphone over to Brian Johnson (of AC/DC fame) who joined the other members of Velvet Revolver to perform a memorable cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll." Never has the name Hard Rock Live been more applicable than after this moment.
Tonight's show not only showed Velvet Revolver is one heck of a talented band it also showed they are a band with a heart. Can you ask for more than that from a Supergroup?
Huricane Katrina is being called the worst natural disaster in the history of the USA. Please donate to the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army or charity of your choice. Please donate food and other needed supplies where ever drop boxes are located.
