The Black Maria - "Lead Us To Reason" CD Review

Toronto natives, The Black Maria, released their first major album, Lead Us To Reason, early 2005. While only forming three years ago, these boys have overcome the well-known statistic of "new-age music is too radio friendly." Pure and utter talent has shined through the cracks of the music industry with the release of this record. The album contains eleven original tracks full of compassion and emotion many bands seem to lack these days.

The creativity the guys put forth into their music is mind-boggling. There is not one track that won't satisfy any emotion that could possibly consume your body. If you're feeling betrayed; upset, listen to their second track and first single, "Betrayal."

The Black Maria

Releasing this song as their first single was a smart choice on their side. "Betrayal" contains a catchy chorus with a rhythmic beat that becomes addicting to listen too. Eventually the track will begin to run through your mind all day until you can listen to it once more. "Betrayal, Betrayal, It rips right through me, How you lie right to me, Betrayal, Betrayal, Will this world make better sense? Once you mean nothing to me..."

Honestly, the farther the album continues, the more sheer brilliance prevails. Vocalist, Chris Gray, obtains an outstanding vocal ability. He is able to complement the guitars (Kyle Bishop and Alan Nacinovic), bass/keyboards (Mike DeErye), and drums (Derek Petrella) perfectly following with the distinct rhythmic flow each instrument provides.

The sixth track on Lead Us To Reason is a song by the name of "The Lines We Cross." Now, this song will most likely not become a single, however, it is absolutely brilliant. Sure, it is a song of raw vocals against a piano with a hint of guitars and drums at the end, but the track is mesmerizing. It is one of those songs that leaves you lost in your thoughts while you can't help to leave the song on repeat. The melody can be summed up as captivating yet hypnotic, while the vocals put you in a trance to whereas you feel what Gray is belting out. With lyrics such as "We're lost in each other, What's one without the other? Fused together, Fused together..." who wouldn't be captured by such emotion?

It honestly wouldn't be surprising if The Black Maria is considered one of "those bands" who do leave their mark in music history. Enabling themselves to create a record with such talent and compassion put into each song is not easy to do. However, they have succeeded in a dream many hope to accomplish one day. Lead Us To Reason is recommend for anyone who is tired of the "same-old-thing" and ready to listen to something new.
