Static-X
"Start a War" CD Review
Release Date: June 14, 2005
Released On: Warner Bros. Records |
Let me start by saying that other than 2001's Machine this is their strongest release to date in my opinion. With everything that's happened most recently with former member
Tripp Eisen's legal troubles, Static-X has prevailed to
produced a great CD in the face of adversity with the help of
ex-member/new member Koichi Fukada.
The CD starts with:
1. The Enemy - This song has a really good strong feel to it
& a catchy but not too over done chorus & still retains its heaviness. Good song to start with.
2. I'm The One - Nice artificial harmonic laced riffing in the beginning of the song. Really nice use of sampling in the breakdown.
3. Start A War - Very aggressive and to the point with this
one.
Soft vocals approach during the verse but then rips
open
with heaviness.
4. Pieces - Monster guitars at the beginning to start things
off.
It keeps an overall fast pace throughout the song even
with
the samples.
5. Dirthouse - Starts with a real old Ministry feel, then
levels out to a nice groove feel riff. Nice use of 2 guitarists
here and filling up the songs chorus.
6. Skinnyman - Groovy drum feel to open this track. Simple verse riffing but their the master at that.
The interlude has a nice sample
intwined
riffing to it.
7. Just In case - I love the heavy opening to this song because you think it's going to explode into something but this stops,
synths enter and then back to heavy. Nice mix-up.
8. Set It Off - Song has a overall eerie feel to it but the chorus
is straight forward metal.
9 .I Want To F***ing Break It - Nice polka intro, because something is lurking around the corner you just know it.
Sure enough a trite laced lyrics of aggression and hate.
Nice short solo courtesy of Koichi Fukada.
10. Night Terrors - Although the intro riff kind of has a
Mudvayne feel to it, Wayne Static & the boys make it their
own by adding elements of samples to beef it up.
11. Otsego Amigo - Good use of effects to start this track and then everything kicks into double time. Double tracked
vocals really beef them up during the verse. Thumps up
on originality here.
12. My Damnation - Simple vocal style really works for this
track cause the background tracks keep the flow of the song.
13. Brainfog - Techno beats, Fukada at his best!
Static-X is:
