System Of A Down
'Mezmerize' CD Review
Release Date: May 17, 2005
Released by: Sony Music |
The much anticipated new release from System Of A
Down finally arrived to me and I must say I was a little skeptical at first. I liked some of their other stuff but with
all the hype on this I treaded carefully.
The CD starts with calming acoustic guitars & harmony vocals, but don't be fooled because if you know System
Of A Down then you know it isn't staying like that. Here we have the first of 2 CD's SOAD will release within the year. "Mezmerize," is the kind of CD that makes a band, but in SOAD's case it's just the next step in their multi mega
star careers.
Just about every song on Mezmerize is top notch and skillfully written. With Daron Malakian writing the majority
of the music and CO-producing as well he delivers a
lot
of unusual riffs and time changes. Serj Tankian's unorthodox vocal style makes every song different and unique. Both of which is pretty much a staple for the
band's sound style and is a recipe for success.
When you listen to the CD a few songs do standout like "B.Y.O.B." with it's catchy riffs and it's political message, "Cigaro" with it's heavy edge & aggressive voicing, "This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm On This Song" with it's unusual riffs, beats and Dead Kennedyesqe vocals.
Over all this is the best CD by SOAD to date, but with
another release yet to come we'll just have to wait and
see if that statement holds true.
