Smile Empty Soul Rocks Orlando
By Kat Coffin/FloridaEntertainmentScene.com |
October 27, 2006 – Orlando, FL - Smile Empty Soul had two performances Friday in Orlando, the first, a short acoustic set at Virgin Megastore, and later, the full blown concert at House of Blues. It was certainly a study of contrasts from one show to the other.
They performed three songs for the acoustic set, one from each of their CDs, “California’s Lonely” from their officially unreleased CD, “Anxiety,” “Silhouettes” from their self-titled debut, and “The Hit” from “Vultures,” their new CD released October 24, 2006 on Bieler Bros. Records.
There wasn't a very large crowd gathered for the acoustic set, a mix of dedicated fans and families passing by. The die-hard fans in attendance relished the casual atmosphere to communicate more with the band than they could in a regular concert setting.
The band sounded really good during the acoustic show, but they didn't look very comfortable. They looked restrained, stuck on their stools instead of taking command of the stage, and carefully choosing their words because of the many children in attendance.
Their later show was their chance to shine, and shine they did.
They played a high-energy 50 minute set, proving this was where they were strongest. Both Ryan Martin (bass) and Mike Booth (guitar) were in constant motion. From the first song, the audience had their head-banging and fist pumping in over-drive, but that wasn’t enough for Sean Danielsen (lead vocals, guitar). The band played the opening bars of “ Sweet Home Alabama” to make sure they had everyone’s attention, and then he stirred the crowd up even more saying, “Would be nice to see a mosh pit going on.”
He got his wish for the rest of the show.
They got the best audience reaction when they played “Silhouettes,” “Bottom of the Bottle,” and “Nowhere Kids.” Their first single from “Vultures,” “The Hit,” had the audience screaming the words right along with the band. They could have chosen something better for their closing song other than Pantera’s “Strength Beyond Strength,” the vocal stretch on that has to be painful.
Smile Empty Soul is:
Sean Danielsen - Lead Vocals/Guitar
Ryan Martin – Bass
Mike Booth – Guitar
Jake Kilmer – Drums
