Morningwood Rocks Orlando
By Liz Fernandez/FloridaEntertainmentScene.com |
June 14, 2006 - Orlando, FL -
I was standing patiently on the main floor of The Social when I was swiftly moved over by a 5’4” girl in a black hooded sweatshirt. I watched her make her way through a tight audience unnoticed and within the blink of an eye she was on stage vibrating much faster than Shakira could and guitars are whaling, drums are banging and I want to believe that yes, I do feel the ground moving. Take Converse shoes, Pom Pom’s, a curly hair lead singer with a huge voice and some pumped up rock and roll and you get Morningwood. A fantastic display of high energy, shameless lyrics, and a show with a lot of sexual attention will get any audience member’s blood rushing. If their were any MW virgins in the audience Chantal Claret, lead singer, made sure you received a life changing experience.

Chantal releases all her energy during her shows and is not afraid to get down and dirty. From drinking out of audience member’s glasses, continually licking her own sweat off her arms and occasionally sucking on an audience member’s finger, she puts 100 % effort in audience participation. She had a toy pony on a stick she allowed an audience member to name after she gave it a ride of a lifetime and then treated it like a dog would their chewing toy. Chantal danced with audience members, got cozy with bass player Pedro Yanowitz (former Wallflower’s drummer) and made great use of the stage floor crawling all over it and reminding us that this show was 18 and up.
During “Babysitter” she screamed at the top of her lungs, her voice so strong and loud. She made her way over to guitar player Phillip Shouse as he ripped up the guitar solo very tastefully in 80s metal style and she danced with a Security member and through his hat back at him.
“Take Off Your Clothes” was expectantly the highlight of the evening. Jaws were dropping but no one could stop looking as an audience member was invited to share the stage and take off her clothes. Chantal expertly undressed the volunteer and proclaimed her nipples tasted like peaches. Enough said! But the men were very satisfied with this public display and well it was my first MW show and now I know I have seen it all.
During “Nth Degree” she joined the audience once again on the floor and had the audience get as low as possible on the floor and as they sang louder, they would rise higher off the ground. By this time everyone at the Social was connected on a different level with this band and would have probably done anything Chantal would have wished.
Chantal and Peter came back for the encore, which Chantal mentioned Orlando had the weakest encore and didn’t deserve it. They performed acoustically their version of “Family Affair” by Mary J. Blige. It was really strange hearing this hip hop song toned down and sung by Chantal. It gave us the opportunity to hear how great her voice really was when she wasn’t screaming at the top of her lungs. She has variable range and strong tonality.
Their last cover was appropriately, “Knock on Wood” and this band went out like a bang! She had everyone singing back “You better knock, knock, knock on wood!” and when Morningwood ended their show nobody wanted to leave.
It was dirty, raunchy, loud, and at times distasteful but it was entertaining and musically appealing. Check out Morningwood when you really need a pick me up.
