Mellowdrone
"Box" CD Review

July 22, 2006 - My first time hearing of Mellowdrone and
I feel that there is a good deal of creativity here, so I did my research. Mellowdrone has a very vocally appealing singer named Jonathon Bates and he is the primary writer and instrumentalist of this entrancing and unique sounding band.
Their sound may stem from some electro pop influences and carry a new wave groove, but they have their own modern vibe and delivery of non-escaping lyrics. The CD envelops distorted guitars and transitional choruses that bring a lot of life to an album that contains its fair amount of programming.
Bates shares his mellow vocals that accompany a darkness that this album portrays. “Whatever The Deal” is track number seven and has a Radiohead vibe to it and it is more up tempo than the other tracks. Track number twelve “Bone Marrow” could possibly stem from a Coldplay influence.
This band however does not come across as imitating to me, because they are consistent in one sound and do not dive into consistent heart pouring lyrics like so many bands do and they remember to add almost a different theme to each song encompassing different musical arrangements and lyrical content. The only thing I would have liked to hear more of a change was the low droning voice of Bates.
