Musician Interview with Andrew (DJ Moody) Rajala
and Garrett Jankowski of Irrational

Andrew (DJ Moody) Rajala

Q: Irrational recently went into the studio to begin recording their sophomore album, how is the album coming along?

Garrett: Things are going really good. We are still writing, we have about 5 songs finished. We are probably going to finish it up in February.

Q: How many songs will be included on this project?

Garrett: Not sure how many yet, we already pre-released 2 songs that will be on the record, "This is a Test" and "Misery" You can check those out on our website.

Garrett Jankowski

Q: Has the band dynamic changed since the first album dropped and if so how has it fueled the creativity on the sophomore album?

Garrett: We defiantly grew and evolved as a band, since our first Album. I think this new Record is going exceed expectations. The songs are way more personal, and emotional. Overall the record is going to be a lot darker and hopeless.

Q: Is there a release date set yet and where will fans be able to purchase the new CD?

Garrett: No nothing is in stone yet, but as soon as we know, you will definitely get 47 flyers, 529 emails, and army of IRRATIONAL fans spray painting the release date on luxury cars, and mobile homes. You will be able to pre-order the CD on our website a few weeks before it drops.

Q: Both of your albums have been released independently, have you ever been tempted to shop for a major label deal?

Moody: Yes please. That is the best way to get your music to the masses. Lets face it, the music market is controlled by big businesses (The Man), whether it be radio, magazines, TV, touring, etc. Just because they control the outlets where music is heard and seen doesn't mean they control the music. Fans still control the music, especially with rock. If fans don't like it, "The Man" ain't gonna play it. The hard part is getting "The Man" to play it a few times so people can hear it and make up their own minds.

Garrett: We are in the process of shopping around right now, but we have a hard-core "do it yourself" attitude, and independently we will still be successful in the underground level and compete with bands with bigger budgets because we want it more.

Q: Recently the Grammy nominations were announced and R&B is dominating the scene once again, industry trends are confirming this fact. As rock musicians do you feel that rock music is getting overlooked?

Moody: Not at all. There is a lot of shitty, generic new rock out there right now that doesn't have the substance and honesty that people crave in a good rock band, but that doesn't mean people will ignore a good true rock band when they hear it. If people want cheesy hooks they can look to R&B and hip hop, which they are doing. Rock is supposed to have a message that says something, weather it be "I hate myself," "God is a fool," "This world is fucked up" or "I would kill someone for your love." Just because there isn't much good rock out there now doesn't mean people won't like a true rock band.

Garrett: It is so trendy yo, (Garrett takes a sip of Pepsi) But yeah I think overall the rock music that is on the Radio is really bland, a lot of these bands have nothing to say, they just got hooked up and didn't pay their dues, and they are over produced. No one wants to hear a 352nd catchy song a "hot producer" wrote, we need some real shit right now... Oh yeah and Fuck American Idol!

Q: For those who have not seen Irrational perform live what could they expect to see at one of your live shows?

Garrett: It is kind of like a retirement home environment, everything is peaceful, and grown men loose control of their bladders. Other than that, you will see a serious rock band with a lot of passion and die-hard fans that make the shows incredible.

Q: Irrational has some pretty hard-core fans, on your website (irrationalband.com) you have a picture of a guy who got a tattoo of your logo…what goes through your head when you meet people that feel that passionately about your music?

Garrett: It is flattering and a lot of pressure I don't want to ever let them down, we appreciate the support so much.

Moody: Wow man, I love you!!!! Can't even begin to explain how touching that is. It makes me want to tattoo his face on my back like Steve-O.

Q: Other than getting inked what are some ways that your fans can become involved in spreading the word about Irrational?

Garrett: Well they can contact us on our website and request flyers for shows, talk about us, buy merch, come to the shows, pimp our videos on myspace.com, and if you would like to join our E-Team and tag message boards, contact Emily at xirrationalangel@yahoo.com

Q: How helpful do they feel online publications like Florida Entertainment Scene is in letting people know about bands such as Irrational.

Garrett: It is awesome, it really helps out the music scene, and we appreciate the support. Much respect.

Q: If you could pick any three bands past or present to perform with who would you pick and where would your dream concert be?

Garrett: Hmm How about NIN (Nine Inch Nails) with Muse, Mindless Self Indulgence, and IRRATIONAL at Hard Rock Live, can you set this up???

Q: What does the future hold for Irrational?

Garrett: IRRATIONAL is just going to continue to grow, and improve. Irrational sets big goals in 2005, by promising the release of a Sophomore Independent Album, a complete Remix Record, and a DVD.

Irrational is from Orlando, FL and regularly play shows in Central Florida. You can sample music by visiting their
