Three Days Grace: One X
By Angela Dudley/FloridaEntertainmentScene.com

August 20, 2006 - Three Days Grace front man Adam Gontier speaks candidly with Florida Entertainment Scene about their new album, “One X”, which debuted in the US at No. 5. With fans proclaiming their first self-titled album to be one of the best debuts ever, expectations of the new album were riding high. Their sophomore album proves that there is still plenty of pain, inner turmoil, and talent to keep fans coming back for more.

The first album was compiled of songs of the first ten years of the band- growing up in a small town, inspired by the lives of family and friend. “This album is more personal, especially to me,” Gontier reveals in a one-on-one interview. “One X” is a story of the last couple of years the band spent on tour. Gontier speaks openly about his emotional state at that time and his feelings of isolation, “I felt alone, which was weird because we were surrounded by people all the time. There were so many things I had to deal with in my personal life. I felt like a target, like I was getting hit with things that other people didn’t have to deal with.” The title of the album represents those feelings.

“One” symbolizing the loneliness and “X” as his feelings of being marked a target for trouble. “Animal I Have Become” is a window into Adam’s own personal dark side and how it completely overtook him as he struggled to ask for help. “Never Too Late” which artistically metamorphoses pain into optimism, is a plea of hope for a friend wanting to commit suicide. Gontier describes it as the most difficult song to write, but feels it ended up being the strongest track on the album.

Rather than focus on writing plenty of songs to pick and choose from later, Three Days Grace prefers to make sure every song is solid and usable. “We tend to write fourteen or fifteen songs and then leave a couple off the record. We went in with fourteen, but there were two that weren’t working with the rest of the material.” One can imagine Gontier’s surprise when he found out from a fan that one of those songs, “Running Away” made it onto the album as an exclusive bonus track sold only in Target stores. “To us, ‘One X’ is a whole and it starts and it ends as one piece, and that track ends the record on a different tone.”

In response to Three Days Grace debuting at #5 in the US, Gontier humbly says the band had given no prior thought to how well the album would debut. However they were surprised and excited to hear of their success. And if their upcoming tour dates are any indications of success, the band has just announced that they will be touring with the Rolling Stones in Canada. Despite all of their glory, Gontier assures fans he will not forget them-the band checks fan email every couple of days and is grateful for the encouragement and support they have given.

Also you fans out there might be interested to know that the band hopes to soon have a DVD out of their live footage, as well as the guys just hanging out.
